There are seniors, and families even, who view the reverse mortgage in a negative way based on common misconceptions and lack of sufficient knowledge about this product.  The truth is, in 1988 government enacted a bill that reformed the reverse mortgage into a safe and secure retirement tool that has recently become very popular among the senior community.  The number of seniors using the reverse mortgage has been growing significantly every year.  As of now, upwards of 350,000 seniors across America have a reverse mortgage.

The FHA, “Federal Housing Administration” created the HECM which stands for “Home Equity Conversion Mortgage” which accounts for the majority of reverse mortgages done in the U.S.  The AARP has written an informational booklet on the HECM which can be obtained by filling out the request form on this page.
